Work Site Opportunities

The Public Building Commission is committed to having residents who live in the community work on the projects being built in their community.

When the General Contractor for a project has been selected, the PBC will work with the contractor to establish the number of positions available to the community based on the manpower schedule for the project. The General Contractor will then set up an application process that will provide experienced residents the opportunity to apply for the available jobs.

Residents without construction experience are encouraged to apply to the New Skill Builders, of which PBC is a sponsor. This is a pre-apprenticeship program that prepares participants to take the apprenticeship test for various trades. For more details, contact the New Skill Builders' information hot line at 773-548-8604.

Dawson Technical Institute is another opportunity for residents who want a career in construction. Dawson Technical Institute offers apprenticeship preparation courses in the following five building trades: Bricklaying, Cement Masonry, Combination Welding, Construction Carpentry, and Plumbing and Fire Protection. For more information, call 773-451-2100.
