Chicago Remembers Observance

Chicago Remembers Events of September 11, 2001

Mayor Richard M. Daley and Governor George H. Ryan joined thousands of Chicago residents on Daley Plaza today in a memorial observance in honor of the victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

The master of ceremonies for the Chicago Remembers Observance was actor Gary Sinise, co-founder of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company. He was joined by actors Henry Godinez, Martha Lavey and E. Milton Wheeler, who read and performed works by Maya Angelou, Theodore Roosevelt, John Donne and William Wordsworth.

Musical selections were performed by Chicago soprano Elizabeth Norman, the Asbury Brass Quintet and the Bank One Choir.

The ceremony included the reading of the Chicago Prayer of Unity, Remembrance and Hope by members of the National Conference for Community and Justice.

40th Birthday Party

The PBC celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the unveiling of the Picasso on August 15, 2007. In celebration of that event, a giant top hat was placed atop the Picasso that reads “Happy 40th Birthday.” The anniversary festivities also included a giant Eli’s cheesecake that was served to well-wishers and passersby.
