Nixon Campus Park
|
Begun in 1997, the four-year, $50 million Campus Parks Program is a joint effort by the Public Building Commission, Chicago Public Schools, Chicago Park District, and the City of Chicago to build 100 new parks. Launched by Mayor Richard M. Daley's vision to replace concrete and asphalt with green, and open spaces, the campus parks are anchored by local public schools and can include playgrounds, baseball fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, and running tracks.
Serving as "community centers," the campus parks become convenient places in which children can play and parents and residents can socialize and relax. Some campus parks also will provide opportunities for outdoor learning through gardening classes, science projects and summer job programs.
Working with the community to design and develop the individual parks, the PBC continues to increase vital recreation space and foster a shared sense of pride in the improvements to our neighborhoods.
