16th District Police Department
|
In partnership with Mayor Richard M. Daley’s Neighborhoods Alive! 21 program and the Chicago Police Department, the Public Building Commission is building 11 new police stations. The new facilities will replace outdated stations, many of which are more than 50 years old.
Featuring some of the most contemporary policing technology available, the new stations are designed to increase both performance by officers and the safety of the community.
District police stations will utilize a prototype - or standard - 44,000 square foot, state-of-the-art design that effectively streamlines costs and expedites the building process. From open floor plans and inviting interiors to community meeting spaces and neighborhood relations offices located in front, the new stations encourage residents to use the facilities, and to feel welcome in doing so.
With the successful Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS) program in mind, this prototype was developed to promote community participation. Building on traditional policing by incorporating problem-solving activities as a primary responsibility of beat officers, the CAPS community policing model works with residents and other institutional stakeholders to identify and prioritize problems affecting the beat and to develop solutions to those problems.

As each new station is built, the individual neighborhoods will also benefit from considerable infrastructure improvements surrounding the facility, such as attractive landscaping, new alleys complete with secured trash compactors, sidewalks, sewers, streetlights and traffic signals.
