Community Partnership Brings Senior Programs To Roseland Community

Today, Mayor Richard M. Daley attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Abbott Park Senior Satellite Center, 49 East 95th Street, announcing the opening of a new $2 million senior satellite center serving the Roseland Community. The center is the fifth of 10 senior centers to be built by the Public Building Commission of Chicago (PBC), in partnership with the Chicago Department on Aging under a $20 million program through the Neighborhoods Alive with Seniors! initiative.

The center will be operated by the Community Mental Health Council and includes a large multipurpose and recreation room, computer room and library.

Mayor Daley said, Seniors are the societal bedrock of our city, and we want them to remain here in Chicago so they can be near their family and friends. It is our hope that places like the Abbott Park Satellite Senior Center will help them continue to be happy, active, contributing citizens.

The newly constructed state-of-the-art center is one of two new satellite senior centers that were built on existing Chicago Park District property saving the City a great deal of money.

The center will open to the public Monday through Friday beginning August 30, 2004 and will offer seniors a fitness program, computer classes with internet access, information and assistance, health screenings, life enrichment programs, benefits eligibility screenings and daily hot lunch.

The Englewood Satellite Senior Center, currently open, will have its ribbon-cutting event this fall and will complete Phase I of the ten new center initiative. Five additional centers will open in 2005.
