New Chicago Lawn Police Station Contract Approved

A new Chicago Lawn police station will be built on the Southwest Side under a $12.2 million construction contract approved today by Public Building Commission of Chicago (PBC).

Under terms of the agreement with UBM Inc., the new 8th District station will be built at 63rd Street and Central Park Avenue, replacing a 77-year-old station now used by Chicago Lawn police, officials said. Construction is expected to begin in the spring. UBM has committed to a 25 percent level of participation by Minority Business Enterprises and 5 percent participation by Women Business Enterprises, officials said.

The new station will offer about 43,000 square feet of space, officials said. It will feature state-of-the-art computers, a fitness room, expanded locker facilities for male and female officers and a large community room along with space for community policing programs.

When the project is completed, officers will work out of a station more than eight times the size of the existing 8th District facility, at 3515 West 63rd Street, which was built in 1926 and is the third-oldest police district building in Chicago.
