PBC Seeks More Contractors For Demolitions

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

December 12, 2001
Contact: Terry Levin
(312) 744-9277

The Public Building Commission (PBC) is actively searching for more contractors to qualify for demolition work in connection with municipal building projects.

Once qualified, companies become eligible to bid on contracts for the demolition of buildings at sites where the PBC plans to construct new police stations, fire stations, branch libraries and other public projects, according to PBC executive director Eileen Carey.

Only pre-qualified firms can bid on this work and the PBC is urging firms to apply for this eligibility. The deadline to apply for pre-qualification is Dec. 28, 2001.

"We are looking for contractors who have the experience to demolish buildings on sites where there also must be some environmental remediation, as well as properties where this extra step is not needed," Carey said.

The PBC is actively encouraging more minority-owned companies to pre-qualify. "We are always looking for ways to expand minority participation on our projects and this demolition work is another opportunity," Carey explained.

The PBC is in the midst of a major building program based on Mayor Richard M. Daley's Neighborhoods Alive 21 program, a four-year $800 million program to replace woefully outdated public facilities-including police and fire stations 70 years old or more and storefront library branches too small to provide optimum services.

Any company interested in pre-qualifying for this demolition work is invited to attend an informational meeting this Friday, Dec. 14, on the second floor of the Daley Center, 50 W. Washington St., starting at 10 a.m.

More information on the PBC also is available at the agency's website at www.pbcchicago.com.
