Last Steel Beam In Place For New Cuffe School

Public Building Commission of Chicago Interim Executive Director Kevin Gujral joined Ald. Leonard DeVille (21st), school officials and community members today as the final steel girder was put in place for the new Paul Cuffe Elementary School, at 83rd Street and Racine Avenue.

The $12 million school is being built by the PBC and is expected to be completed and open for the 2003-2004 school year, officials said. Also on hand was Kim Bailey, who represented Ald. Thomas Murphy (18th); Cuffe Principal Lonnie Ball; Perry Young, of the Cuffe Local School Council; O'Morris Adams, president, Foster Park Community Council; and 6th District Police Cmdr. Everett L. Johnson.

The three-story school will include 26 classrooms, along with specialized art, music, computer and science rooms; a gym with bleachers that are accessible to people with disabilities; a library with Internet connections; and central air conditioning. The school grounds will feature landscaping, two play areas and a teachers' parking lot.

Castle Construction Co., which is handling construction of the new school, committed to participation of 25% by minority-owned businesses and 5% by women-owned businesses, officials said.
