The Public Building Commission of Chicago (PBC) Internet site is in the running to win government web site of the year honors from GovSpot.com, an online resource center for government information that named PBC's www.pbcchicago.com its "Site of the Month."

GovSpot.com seeks out "the best and most relevant" government information available online and selects a state or local site that makes "innovative use of web technology," site officials said. The PBC web operation won site of the month for August, and now is eligible for "Site of the Year." Past monthly winners include New York, Boston and Philadelphia. New York won the award for 2001.

Mayor Richard M. Daley, who chairs the PBC, congratulated commissioners and staff on the web site honors from the Washington, D.C.-based GovSpot. "The PBC web site gives the public a first-hand look at Chicago's successful building program," Daley said. "People can read descriptions of our work and see pictures of ongoing projects such as fire and police stations, libraries, schools and senior citizen centers under construction in neighborhoods throughout the city."

More than 15,000 visitors were logged on the PBC web site during August, officials said. The site carries more than 1,000 photos of PBC projects, and provides information on upcoming contracts and a bid calendar. Also, subcontractors may sign up to receive alerts on contracts.
