The proposed site for a modern new Logan Square branch library was introduced in the City Council Wednesday by Mayor Richard M. Daley.

If approved by the Council, the new branch would be constructed at 3020-46 W. Fullerton Ave., on the north side of the street between Sacramento and Albany avenues, Daley said. Public comment is invited between now and the Council's final vote on the matter.

The new branch would replace the current Logan Square library at 3255 W. Altgeld St., a building constructed in 1952.

"We want every Chicagoan to have access to a full array of library services in modern, comfortable settings," said Daley, whose administration has built or renovated 41 library branches to date. "Reading is essential to the success of our schoolchildren and enriches the lives of everyone, young and old."

The new Logan Square branch will house a comprehensive collection of materials for children, teens and adults-including books, books on tape, newspapers and periodicals, and computers with Internet access. The new building, fully accessible to people with disabilities, also will maintain the Logan Square branch's excellent collection of Spanish-language materials.

This new site is the second one selected for the new Logan Square public library. The first, about two blocks west on the northwest corner of Fullerton and Sawyer, was deferred when it was learned the federal government was seeking the same land, according to Public Building Commission (PBC) executive director Eileen Carey.
