Board Approves Contracts for Two New Schools, Vehicle Facility

PBC also to take on surveillance camera project

The Public Building Commission of Chicagos Board of Commissioners today approved construction contracts for two elementary schools and a new vehicle maintenance facility.

The Commissioners also approved the Commissions taking on an installation project for the Chicago Housing Authority.

With the Boards decisions, a George Sollitt/Oakley joint venture will construct the new Langston Hughes/Davis Developmental Elementary School, at 240 W. 104th Street, under a $30.2 million contract, while K.R. Miller Contractors Inc. will build the new Mark T. Skinner Elementary School, at 1260 W. Adams Street, under a $25.4 million contract. The Langston Hughes/Davis contract includes 24 percent MBE participation and four percent WBE participation, and the Skinner contract includes 33 percent MBE participation and five percent WBE participation.

Also, Walsh Construction will build the South West Vehicle Maintenance Facility, at 5215 S. Western Avenue, under a $15.2 million contract. The contract calls for 25 percent MBE participation and four percent WBE participation.

Both the one-story Langston Hughes/Davis Developmental Elementary School and the three-story Skinner Elementary School are expected to be ready for students in the fall of 2009. The centrally-located vehicle maintenance facility, which because of specific design characteristics will bring the ability to work on every manner of city vehicle, is expected to be completed in June of 2009.

Also approved by the board was a request from the Chicago Housing Authority for the PBCs assistance in the installation of the CHAs Surveillance Camera Strategy Program.
