Mayor Daley Christens New Senior Center In Portage Park

Mayor Richard M. Daley cut the ribbon today at the grand opening of a senior center in the Portage Park community built by the Public Building Commission of Chicago (PBC).

The state-of-the-art facility at 4100 North Long Avenue was built within an existing Chicago Park District building, officials said. It is the third of 10 senior satellite centers that are being built through the mayor's "Neighborhoods Alive with Seniors!" initiative - a $20 million commitment. The City so far has invested $5.2 million in centers in the Portage Park, West Town and Austin communities.

Two other centers are expected to open soon in the Englewood and Roseland communities.

The Portage Park Senior Satellite Center is operated and managed by Christian Churches Caring. The multi-use center will share space with the Chicago Park District and benefit from its programs, such as the Olympic-sized swimming pool and senior club.

The facility will also offer a daily snack bar with soup and salad, a full library with computers, a fitness room with treadmills and weights, and a multi-purpose room that includes a large-screen television.

"I want Chicago to be known as a city that supports and cares about its seniors," Daley said, "and I'm committed to making it the best city in the world for seniors to live."
