The Public Building Commission (PBC) Board today approved a $22.6 million construction contract for the new Tarkington Elementary School.

Under the terms of the contract approved Tuesday, March 9, 2004, The George Sollitt Construction Co. will build the new school, to be located on 71st St. within Marquette Park, just west of Kedzie Avenue. Plans for the new two-story elementary school will include art, music and science classrooms, a full-serving kitchen and dining facilities, a multipurpose room and a field house that will be shared by the Chicago Park District. The project will also involve improvements to Marquette Park, including a new soccer field.

In addition, the new Tarkington Elementary School will be the first in the Chicago Public Schools’ system to have the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. With a building area approximately 134,000-square-feet, the school will sit on a 9.82-acre site. Under terms of the contract, “The George Sollitt Construction Co has committed to approximately 25 percent participation in the project by Minority Business Enterprises and 5 percent participation by Women Business Enterprises, officials said.

The PBC routinely designs and builds new schools and improves existing facilities for the public schools. Mayor Richard M. Daley serves as chairman of the PBC. Other actions taken Tuesday by the PBC Board are listed on the PBC's web site at www.pbcchicago.com.
