PBC To Build New West High School, Campus Park

A new high school will be built and a West Side elementary school will see a new campus park built under plans approved today by the Public Building Commission of Chicago (PBC).

The PBC awarded a $33.8 million contract to build the new Kelvyn Park South High School, at 4338 West Wabansia Avenue. Plans call for expanded classroom space, updated computer and science labs, a library and gymnasium, officials said. Walsh Construction Co. will build the new school, while VOA Associates Inc. will serve as the architect, officials said.

The PBC designs and builds new schools, improves existing facilities for the public schools, and currently manages about $75 million of the schools' development program, PBC officials said. Mayor Richard M. Daley chairs the PBC.

PBC Board members also awarded a $328,500 contract to Integrated Construction Technology Corp. to build the Lewis School Campus Park at 1431 North Leamington Avenue.

Under Daley's Campus Parks Program, the City, Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Park District are at work replacing asphalt and concrete around schools with open space, landscaping, playgrounds, basketball or tennis courts, ball fields and tracks, officials said.
