PBC Approves Contract for Pre-Construction Work for the New Westinghouse High School

The Public Building Commission of Chicago today approved a $4.9 million contract for pre-construction work on the site of the new Westinghouse High School.

Under the terms of the contract OCA Construction Inc., will serve as the prime contractor for site preparation and underground utility work for the new school, which will replace the current Westinghouse High School. The new school will be built near the current school at Franklin Blvd., and Kedzie Ave.

While the current Westinghouse is exclusively a vocational education school, the new facility will offer both a vocational education program and a selective enrollment college prep program under the same roof, officials said. Each school will house about 600 students.

The existing Westinghouse will remain open while the new school is under construction. Construction of the new school is expected to begin in the spring of this year. When the new school opens in the fall of 2008, the existing Westinghouse will be torn down for athletic fields.

The PBC manages construction and renovation projects for the Chicago Public Schools as well as the City of Chicago and its other sister agencies. Mayor Daley serves as the PBC's chairman.
